The elephant is the one that keeps the forest alive.
An elephant travels an average of 10–20 kilometers through the forest in a day… But it’s not just walking.
On this journey, the elephant eats a variety of wild fruits and plants. But here’s an interesting fact — the food an elephant eats is not digested completely! So the seeds come out in its dung without being damaged.
This is where things get even more interesting…
Elephant dung is a nutritious natural fertilizer. Since it has moisture and protection, those seeds germinate very easily. In other words, it is like a “mobile forest creator” that helps new plants grow wherever an elephant travels!
In addition to this…
Elephants prevent the forest from becoming too thick by breaking down small trees and shrubs. This allows sunlight to reach the ground and grass to grow → which becomes food for animals like deer.
It creates holes to find water and provides life to other animals during droughts. It helps other animals to move around by creating paths in the forest.
All this makes the elephant an “ecosystem engineer” — the main creature that maintains the balance of the forest.
If there were no elephants?
Some trees would disappear… the diversity of animals would decrease.
Therefore,
“If you want to save the forest, you have to save the elephant.”
The Kerala Elephant Foundation wishes you and all the elephants of the world, Happy World Elephant Day!
